You may have noticed but J and Q like nostalgia and, both being children of the 80s, when the TrailerTown for Summer of 84 came out, we were immediately drawn to it. One part Rear Window, one part Fright Night, and one part Stand By Me, this new feature by the directors of Turbo Kid shows a lot to get excited about.

If you haven’t seen it yet, watch the TrailerTown for Summer of 84 right here and then read our Top 5 thoughts about it below:

Top 5 Things About the Summer of 84 Trailer

  1. We Love the 80s – The best thing VH1 ever did was the creation of the show I Love the 80s, pitting current comedians against the ridiculous and the revered from one of history’s most loved decades. Not only is this movie set in the 80s, but it is about the specific year that J was born. We imagine that’s what the plot is about.
  2. Turning Up the Turbo – You may not be familiar with the names François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, but you should be. Their first feature (based off a short of the same name) was Turbo Kid, and if you haven’t seen that film, it’s a wonderful love letter to the over-the-top sci-fi action of the 80s and 90s. Watch it immediately.
  3. Whats-Their-Names – It’s always risky to base a movie around the performance of kids, but if Stand By Me, IT (2017), and The Goonies taught us anything, it’s that if you get a bunch of relatively unknown kid actors (with maybe one famous one mixed in), you can create magic. We love that the cast is full of relative unknowns (with the exception of Rich Sommer, Harry Crane from Mad Men) and can’t wait for them to impress us.
  4. Making The Playlist – The Guest easily had one of our favorite movie soundtracks of 2014, followed closely by It Follows. What made those two stand out was their use of 80s sounds and synth and around the 0:19 mark in this TrailerTown, those 80s vibes come in strong….and we love it!
  5. There Will Be Blood – François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell are known for going over the top, but Summer of 84 looks to be more reserved than their other outings, but the last 30 seconds of this TrailerTown gives us the impression that we’ll be getting some great blood spatter and violence.
