Cars was a pretty good (yet under-rated) Pixar movie while Cars 2 was a disgrace to everyone with eyeballs; and from the looks of this first official TrailerTown for Cars 3, they realized that and are going back to their roots. We’re pretty excited.

Look, we’re not Pixar apologists here at High Five: the Podcast. Thay had a streak of ruining good franchises with terrible sequels (Toy Story excluded), but with the recent Finding Dory and the buzz around the possibilities for Incredibles 2, we’re slightly optimistic they’ve gotten their shit together.

Top 5 Things About the Cars 3 Trailer

  1. Back to Their Roots – First things first, the best thing about this TrialerTown is that they have done away with International espionage, and a too heavy focus on Mater, to get back to what made the original worth watching: a superstar finding his way amidst a competitive, changing racing industry. It’s also nice to see he still has a connection to Thomasville.
  2. The Cast – Pixar is always great about filling their movies with great actors, so to see a cast list that includes Owen Wilson, Nathon Fillion, Bonnie Hunt, Margo Martindale, Armie Hammer, Tony Shaloub, Kerry Washington, and Chris Cooper gets us pumped up.
  3. The Animation – This should be no surprise, but Pixar can design the shit out of some computer animation. This movie looks to up their game, and the grittiness of the race wrecks sends pins through our bones.
  4. That Jump – Wait, did Lightning McQueen just jump off the wheels of a flipped car through epic smoke? Yes, yes he did.
  5. Training Montage – Every Cars movie needs a small town, Rocky 4-esque training montage, and this one looks to have one. If only it was set to You’re The Best Around by Joe Esposito.

So, what do you think? Can Cars 3 make up for the garbage fire that was Cars 2 or is there not enough good will left for the franchise to Tokyo drift its way back into our hearts?
